About Mary Mother of the Church Parish

Mary Mother of the Church Parish was founded in May 1979, but was established as a parish in November of the same year.

Our first parish priest was the late Fr. Roger Abasolo († 1995). He came at a time when the parish was approximately half the size of its present population of about 5,000 households.

The new parish did not have its own church. The Holy Mass used to be celebrated at site of the present Clubhouse on Lalaine Bennet St. Fr. Roger’s efforts paid off. Before the close of the following year, the parish had its own church in the Vista Grande area. It was consecrated by His Eminence Jaime Cardinal Sin on December 23, 1980. This was the start of its gradual growth and development as a parish. Fr. Roger will be remembered as the writer of the parish hymn: “Maria Ina Ng Iglesia” which, to this day, continues to be sung in honor of the Blessed Mother.

In July 1981, Fr. Roger was given an opportunity to take up further studies in New Jersey, USA. With his departure, the parish welcomed Fr. Franklin Villanueva as its new pastor in August, 1981. Fr. Frank is best remembered for his simplicity. He served the parish for a little over five years. In late 1986, he took a leave and was later commissioned to promote the Marian Devotion in the Archdiocese of Manila.

Replacing Fr. Frank in October, 1986 was a new priest who had just finished studies in the seminary. At age 26, Fr. Miguelito Lagrimas had become the third pastor of the seven-year old parish. Despite the absence of prior parish work, Fr. Mike took on his assignment with vigor. Finding the church isolated from the population center, he introduced a new dimension in parishioner relations — “street masses.” Fr. Mike combined the vigor of his youth and his intellectual gift to deliver well-prepared homilies and bring the parish closer to the people. A Magna Cum Laude in Sacred Theology he served the parish up to the early part of 1990.

In March, 1990, Fr. Mike moved on to become the pastor of Holy Redeemer Parish in Quezon City. He was replaced by Fr. Romy Fedellaga († 2016) who served the parish up to 1996. Fr. Romy is best remembered for being a “down to earth” person— one who has a heart for the poor. It was during his term when the parish played host to a large group of young people from Nueva Caceres who came to Metro Manila to attend the World Youth Day celebration.

With Fr. Romy’s departure in 1996, Fr. Jerico Habunal became the fifth pastor of the parish. Fr. Jerry officially assumed pastoral responsibility for Mary Mother of the Church. He was born in Sto. Nino, South Cotabato; raised in Manila; and became a priest on April 19, 1980 with the Blessed Sacrament Fathers. His credentials as a formator and rich parish background combine to give a new sense of discipline and direction in the areas of pastoral care and management.

In the year 2002, a new parish priest was assigned. He was Monsignor Felipe Ocol, a sincere, honest, respectable and fatherly priest. He’s also so “cool”, with no trace of disdain and resentment even in the midst of turmoil. He is very energetic, disguising his true age. He was known as the “dancing priest” , the most sought-after “Dance Instructor” (DI) in most parish affairs. This soft-spoken priest was very welcoming and accommodating, trying to please everybody with his charm and charisma, thus seeing the emergence of the different church organizations during his time. He was the longest serving priest of the parish having served for 9 years.

Then in 2011, came another, Monsignor Benedict Aquino. Because of health reasons, he didn’t live long to serve the parish. He died in June, 2014.
